77th Motor Maids Convention – Day 3
The thirteen ladies above are Golden Life Members. They have been active Motor Maids for 50 years or more.
The two major events on Day 3 of the convention are the business meeting and the banquet. At the meeting there is an election of new officers (every three years when the convention is in the central region), selection of the convention two years out, and adoption of new by-laws. The meeting started at 8:30 a.m. and was scheduled to be over by 12:30 p.m., but it wasn’t over until 2 p.m. During the meeting, the group learned that the 2019 convention will be in Temecula Valley, California. Two Florida members were elected to national office, Pam Tiller as treasurer and Cyndi Richards as supply officer.
We installed a reverse pulley on Beth’s bike a few months ago. The rear wheel locked up when Beth engaged the reversing mechanism a couple of times this week. While Beth was in the meeting, I called the manufacturer to describe the problem and see if there was anything we could do to correct the situation. He advised us to take the bike to a Harley dealer and have a stock pulley put back on.
So I rode Beth’s bike to the dealer in Peoria and explained the situation. They didn’t have the parts in stock, so they took the parts off a used bike and installed them on Beth’s bike. We boxed all the parts of the reverse pulley and took them to FedEx to ship back to the manufacturer.
We made it back to the hotel just in time for the start of the banquet. The dining room was packed. The official attendance at the convention was 428 members and 116 guests.
There were a lot of awards given out. Members received awards for 10, 15, 20, etc. years of continuous membership. Donna May Behnke was given the Golden Life award for 50 years of membership.
Ev Straight was recognized for 60 years of membership.
The top four finishers in each of the A and B classes of the Dot Robinson Road Rally were awarded plaques. In the revised tally, Beth scored 998 points +45 seconds for seventh place in the A Class.
There was a raffle for two quilts and a 50/30/20 raffle. Beth won the 20% prize.
Tomorrow we start the journey home and stay overnight with friends near Nashville.
