Day 2 of our trip to Moncton had lots of little adventures. We thought we were going to have some fun riding on the Blue Ridge Parkway. We looked at the radar and we could see that we would be heading into some rain. When we stopped for gas, we could see that we might avoid having to put on our rain suits if we waited awhile, so we did.

We continued up I-77 and soon encountered a lot of fog and heavy overcast. We decided to skip the BRP as it would be too foggy to navigate or see anything interesting. Then we hit a snag. The traffic on I-77 came to a halt – a turn-off your-engine halt. We could see the picture another Waze user posted at a position about 10 miles ahead of where we were. The picture showed a tractor trailer on its side. The trailer was split open and the contents were scattered about. It appeared that I-77 was closed in both direction.

When we got to an exit we took it and followed the road to a police detail. They were routing traffic around the closed section. They said the BRP was just 8 miles ahead, so we headed south and found it. The road was enshrouded with heavy fog, but we had no choice but to keep going. Soon the fog cleared and we were able to enjoy several miles of sweeping turns. At Mabry Mill we stopped and took a few pictures.

Within a mile of the mill the fog set in again along with rain. We were able to pull over and put on our rain suits, but the conditions created the worst few miles we have ever encountered. We could see more than about 150 feet. We found a way down off the BRP and made our way back to I-77 north of the closure. Electric signs said the road was still closed.

We rode in and out of rain the rest of the day and arrived at our host’s home around 8 pm.

Maybe we’ll have a little less adventurous day tomorrow.
