Returning Home From the Convention
Friday morning we took our time getting up, having breakfast and checking out of the hotel. We received a bonus at checkout – the hotel gave us a 50% discount on the first night’s rate because of the lack of air conditioning!
We spent the morning riding north to the Barber Motorsports Museum in Birmingham. We took back roads, including AL-25. If you haven’t ridden that road, you should add it to your list of fun-roads-to-ride. There are twisties and switchbacks for your riding pleasure. Beth scraped her floorboards at least once.
We spent about two hours touring the museum. We read a few of the plaques; it would take two days to read everything.
A large number of brands of motorcycles are represented in the collection. There were names I never heard of. It’s really fascinating to see the variety of ways a motor, a frame, and two wheels have been assembled to make a motorcycle.
Just after noon about 40 Motor Maids/guests rode three laps around the track at the museum in a “parade.” (That means they went pretty slowly.) You can see a video of their ride in the sidebar.
From the museum we headed south on secondary highways to Thomasville, Ga., where we spent the night. The weather was hot and humid when it wasn’t raining. We had a few showers and even put on our rain gear at one point. Of course it stopped raining about five minutes after suiting up.
We rode the final 260 miles home on Saturday morning. The first thing we did when we got home was take showers. Riding in the Southeast in July is very uncomfortable.
Our next journey begins in 10 days when we head to Colorado for Shark Week VIII. We’ll pickup the blog then.
