On the Road to East Peoria – Day 3
We took our time getting started this morning as we had only 300 miles to travel to reach our destination. We planned a portion of the route off the interstates and saw a lot of corn and soy beans along the way.
We made an impromptu stop in Vandalia, IL to take a picture of the second capitol of Illinois. The town was the capital from 1819 to 1839.
Lincoln served in the legislature there from 1834-1839.
Our second stop was in Pana, IL, where my mother taught high school during WW-II.
We had a picnic in Kitchell Park. It was interesting to realize my mother undoubtedly went to picnics in this park.
We used the placemats Beth purchased a couple of days ago.
How much we become more like our parents. My parents and grandparents always packed picnic lunches for day trips.
The park has a large memorial to those local residents who died in the “Great War” and smaller plaques listing the names of those lost in later wars.
We checked into our hotel a bit before 3:00 p.m. …
… registered for the convention, greeted old friends, and took a look at the items in the raffle room.
There is a beautiful quilt being raffled separately.
We had dinner with friends from Saint Petersburg. Fortunately we missed the rain while we were in the restaurant.
