Nature Day
Wednesday, 8/2 – Anchorage
We took our time getting going this morning. Beth fixed bacon and eggs for breakfast. They were delicious.
Mike and Lynne went downtown to rent bikes and ride along the waterfront.
We opted for a day of nature walks. In the morning we went to the University of Alaska Anchorage campus to take the Chris Turletes Memorial Tree Tour. It’s a self-guided walking tour around the west campus. Click Here to read about it. It was a bit difficult to find – we had to ask a couple of people for directions. If you come here and are interested, the tour starts at the greenhouse beside Gordon Hartlieb Hall.
Each tree has a plastic tag with a number on one side and a QR code on the other.
This is the first of 104 trees on the walk. We managed to see about 80 of them. The walk is more like a treasure hunt as you have to look carefully for the tags.
It was nice to see this plaque as I’m a member of Beta Gamma Sigma.
There were plenty of beautiful flowers as well.
In the early afternoon, Beth attended a church meeting via zoom. After that we went to the Potter Marsh where we saw salmon swimming upstream. The marsh was formed when the railroad built an embankment across a flat area and blocked three streams. Culverts were built underneath the embankment to allow the streams to flow into the bay.
I doubt you can see them but the salmon were swimming in place above the rocks on the left side of the stream.
Staying in this campsite 4 nights was a nice break. Not having to pack up every day is great. The wi-fi was excellent, which allowed me to upload all our photos to our home server. We get going again in the morning. We’re headed to Denali.
I find your blog amazing. I am enjoying the pictures immensely. They are amazing
