Ride, Rain, Ride, No Rain, No Cell Service
Monday, 8/7 – Haines Junction, YT to Swift River, YT
We turned on the heater first thing this morning. It worked and stayed on as long as we wanted it. Hooray!
Refreshed after a good night’s sleep, we packed and headed down the road. All four us slept later than we usually do.
We took a quick break at a rest area to put on another layer of clothes. It was warm at the campground, and we’d worked up a little bit of sweat as we packed up. Once on the road we realized it was cooler than we thought.
Our first gas stop was scheduled for Whitehorse. We also want to get some groceries at a real grocery store, so we headed to Super A Foods. From the front, the store looked like a gas station with a convenience store, but once inside we could see it was a regular full-service grocery. In one stop we were able to get gas, groceries, and coffee. Also, several people stopped us in the parking lot to ask about our journey. All-in-all it was one of the nicest “gas stops” we’ve had on the trip.
About the time we were looking for a rest area to stop for lunch, it started misting and then drizzling. We found a rest stop and had lunch in the RV while it rained outside.
By the time we finished lunch the rain stopped, and we rode the rest of the afternoon in partly cloudy, cool conditions.
Our campground this evening, the Continental Divide Lodge and Campground, has very nice sites; however, it’s pretty run-down. There is no cell service and no wi-fi. It does have a laundry, which Beth and Lynne took advantage of. When we arrived, there were no other campers. A couple of RVs drove in later.
The right tire on the camper has gone 7700 miles, and is pretty worn in spots, so I decided to change it. The change went easily.
Just as Beth finished preparing dinner and in the middle of doing laundry, some very dark clouds came in from the south and brought us a brief thunder shower. Fortunately, we had enough time to get everything inside. We ate dinner in the laundry room as we waited for the dryer to finish.
Since we have no internet access, I’m working on the blog using Word and will transfer it when we get decent access.
It’s chilly now, so we are going to fire up the heater for a bit and get ready for bed.
