Time For a Refreshing Soak
Monday, 7/24 – Ft. Nelson, BC to Liard Hot Springs, BC
We started the day with a visit to Fort Nelson Heritage Museaum. Beth’s long-time friend, Judy Navratil, suggested we visit and look for the book her parents wrote as a first-person account of building the Alaska Highway. Her dad was with the US Army Corps of Engineers surveying the area. Unfortunately the museum doesn’t carry their book anymore.
The museum has 8 or 9 buildings filled with old stuff. As with any such collection, it’s fun to browse and once-in-awhile exclaim, “My grandmother had one of those.” To me, it seems anytime someone’s Aunt Sally died they donated her stuff to the museum. It was fun to see all the old things. As in Dawson Creek, we could walk through everything without barriers or ropes.
The road was good, bad and ugly. We had to stop for construction and wait for a pilot car.
We stopped a couple of times along the way for scenic photos.
We stopped for gas and lunch. Gas was $1.999 Canadian per liter.
Made it to campground and filled up. There was no potable water in the area, hence no showers. We walked across the road to Liard Hot Springs Provincial Park and enjoyed the warm water.
They have put up an electric fence around the campground. The fence wasn’t there in 2016, so they must have decided to take extra precautions.
It’s Mike’s birthday, so we had dinner at the lodge. Beth and I split an Elk burger. It was very tasty,
There hadn’t been any bears at this campground in some time, but we took precautions and brought everything into the tent. Today we passed 5000 miles on the trip.
5 thousand miles. Come home already
