Destruction Road
Thursday, 7/27 – Haines Jct. YT to Tok, AK
It was very cool and gray this morning. although we could see the mountains a little better.
We had a beautiful ride along Kluane Lake. It’s the largest lake in the Yukon Territory. Check it out on Google Maps and you’ll get an idea of just how large it is.
We stopped in Destruction Bay for gas, coffee, and a snack. This was sort of the “last meal” before tackling the worst 160 miles of road on the Alcan.
I had soup here to warm up in 2016. We had English Muffins today.
We battled the road for most of the rest of the day. There were potholes, patches, patches on patches, frost heaves, gravel, washboards, pilot cars, and dust. We did find a very nice rest area for lunch. There was plenty of room to turn around and a toilet. Beth tried to take a picture of a muskrat swimming, but it was just too small to show up in a photo.
Here are a couple of typical vistas along the highway.
Eventually we made it to the border. Crossing was not a problem for us, but they confiscated a half-dozen eggs from the RV.
We are staying in a nice, large campground in Tok. It’s across the road from where I stayed in 2016. This one has 165 sites.
We were able to wash the road grime off the bikes.
