Two Days Home
Sunday
It’s finally time to head home after nearly two weeks of fun and adventure.
In anticipation of the predicted rain, we parked the bikes near the guest quarters door for quick loading. Fortunately, it wasn’t raining as we packed up the bikes.
We got underway about 7 a.m. fully prepared for the rain.
We made it down the mountain before it started to drizzle. For the next eight hours we rode through alternating rain and drizzle. It was slow-going. We covered 200 miles in seven hours. We waited out the worst of the rain at the Boonville Restaurant.
Bacon and toast are great comfort foods. The staff and patrons were so nice to us. Everyone wished us well.
This was not a day for a picnic lunch, so we parked our trikes in a McDonald’s parking lot while we had lunch.
The rain cleared eventually. The last 125 miles were dry. Beth shopped for dinner (Southwest Chicken Salad) at the local Walmart Market.
It was a long, tiring day. It took us 11-1/2 hours to cover 400 miles. We were grateful for a hot bath and comfortable bed at the same Comfort Inn we stayed at in Statesboro, GA, on the way north.
Monday
We had breakfast, packed up the bikes, and left our hotel around 7:30 a.m. The weather was cool and the clouds were high in the sky. It looked like it was going to be a much easier day for us. Our planned route took us straight down US-301 to Ocala, FL, then I-75 and I-275 home.
Our first stop for gas and coffee was at a TA truck stop in Folkston, GA. The place was filthy and you could smell the old frier oil in the restaurant section. We made a mental note to never stop there again.
We just kept going south. By the time we got to southern Georgia, the temperature and humidity rose to their normal late Spring levels. When it was time for lunch, we stopped at Love’s in Hawthorne, FL, a regular fuel and break stop for us when we travel US 301.
We filled our tanks at the station closest to home and tucked everything into the garage.
The trip was 2,165 miles total. The bikes worked well, and we have only a short list of things to fix or pack for the trip to Alaska. We’ll be back in July to tell that story. Thanks for following us on this trip and leaving your comments.
