Shark Week III – Day 1
This was my day to lead one of the “Hot” rides. The destination was the Valley of Fire near Overton, NV. One hardy couple, Al and Annette, signed up for the ride.
The valley is 85 miles southwest of St. George, just a few miles off I-15. The first 10 – 15 miles of I-15 runs through the Virgin River Gorge. It’s a narrow canyon, and the road winds back and forth as it drops to the Mohave Desert. The temperature was in the upper 70s when we left at 8:30 am, but it rose quickly. We stopped every 40 miles to cool off and get additional water. (I drained my 2-liter Camelback twice today.) By the time we finished seeing the valley it was 104 degrees.
The Valley of Fire gets its name from the red rock outcroppings. Many of the rocks have holes in them scoured by the wind and rain. There are stunning views in every direction.
From the visitors’ center we rode up to the “White Domes.” This area has been used in several films.
We rode back down from the domes and exited the park to the east. We stopped one more time for lunch and then made a bee-line for the hotel.
Late this afternoon the local Harley dealer hosted a barbecue dinner for all the attendees.
Picnic tables have been set up in the parking lot. This has become a standard practice since SW-I.This evening I’ll relax, sit at a picnic table, and chat with friends. I might even consume a beverage – have to keep hydrated, you know.
