The Oregon Coast Part 1
We woke to a temperature of 46 degrees in our tent. The cold confirmed the down side of down sleeping bags – they don’t insulate on the underside. We put a couple of microfiber towels under the bags to try to improve the insulation. The towels helped some.
Because of the cold and the fact we didn’t have a picnic table at out site led me to suggest we go to a close-by café for breakfast. Beth didn’t need any convincing, so we walked past part of the harbor to Jackson’s Café.
We had a hearty breakfast…
and looked wistfully at the bakery counter.
When I disconnected last night the lock for the hitch was missing. I remember putting it on in the morning, but it disappeared. After getting gas we went to Ace Hardware to get a new lock. At my age, stuff disappears.
With full tanks of gas and lock in place, we continued our trek north. All the turn outs are on the south-bound side, making it hard for us to stop and take pictures. At one point I was able to make a U-turn and return to a turnout with a view of a lighthouse. I stopped at this turnout in 2007 and took the same picture.
The road at this point is above a steep cliff. There’s a flock of birds on the rocks below. They may be Cormorants. Occasionally one would go out fishing. It was interesting to watch them for a few minutes.
A little farther up the road we stopped at a picnic stop and had our lunch.
This is a view of the shore at the picnic stop.
We stopped for the day at a hotel in Corvallis, OR.
We walked to a grocery store for a few items for our in-room dinner. Beth fixed barbecue chicken and Sunflower Crunch chopped salad. We also went to Bed, Bath, and Beyond and got a small blanket to put on top of the camper mattress.
Tomorrow we will visit a friend of Beth’s from grade school and high school.
Whenever I tent camped, I always had a “closed cell” pad under my sleeping bag. They are light weight. If you have room to carry them, it would definitely be worth going to a camping store and pick up a couple.
Good idea. We’ll check it out.
