These videos are great. I cannot figure out how to route from Yellowstone over Bear Tooth Pass. I know it is closed in the winter but I verified it is currently open.
Go to your Options. Activity Profile, Routing, and select Date and Time Closures under Feature Type Avoidances. That should allow BaseCamp™ to route on any road that has seasonal closures.
Hey Tim, I’m writing to first express my many thanks for you very informative videos in using Basecamp. They have been very helpful. However, I have two major questions concerning the use of Basecamp to define routes to download to my Garmin SmartDrive 61. First let me describe my setup.
I’m using a Windows 10 computer with the latest version of the operating system installed and the latest version of the Garmin SmartDrive 61 software and Basecamp. I have installed the latest map version (North America NT 2026.1) on both my computer and Basecamp.
My wife and I are planning a very long trip from Virginia to Vermont next month, so I decided to create a route in Basecamp for that event. Once I viewed all of your Basecamp videos, I decided to start by creating a very small route in my neighborhood just to test a route containing one start waypoint, one layover waypoint and one destination waypoint. I quickly created the route using the routing tool and then created a number of shaping points using the Insert tool and the Alt-Drag method. I then downloaded that route to my SmartDrive 61. I then test drove that route several times and it worked perfectly. However, when I intentionally made a wrong turn while following the route to see how my SmartDrive 61 would react, it got completely lost and never recovered. I repeated this several times and got the same results. I was expecting to see the normal “Recalculating” message to appear and then would receive corrective instructions. That never happen. In fact, it was instructing me to turn immediately onto a street but that street was nowhere near my location. It was lost.
I contacted Garmin Tech support and they basically said that they do not support Basecamp anymore and to use the SmartDrive 61 Trip planner to create the route. That’s a bad joke. Trying to use a 6.5-inch SmartDrive 61 screen and my finger to create shaping points in my neighborhood much less on a 600-mile trip with divided highways is impossible.
My first question is, have you encountered this problem and is there a solution?
My second question involves the distinction of Waypoints and Shaping points. My understanding is that Waypoints are alerting and that you have to drive through them. My understanding of Shaping points is that they are not alerting and that you don’t have to drive through them, implying that while driving a route containing shaping points and you accidently made a wrong turn, the SmarDrive 61 would do a “Recalculating” and either get you back to the missed shaping point or the next shaping point based on your settings (fastest, etc).
Thanks in advance for you help.
