A Short Day Riding
Yesterday we rode 500 miles; today we rode only 400 miles. The morning was cool. Mid-morning we ran into a line of weather, but the only rain we had was the kind that gets your windshield dirty.
We stopped at a Pilot for coffee. This station was very clean. It’s one of the nicest we’ve been to.
Later we stopped for gas at a Shell station, They had a picnic table out back where we had lunch. We guessed the fiberglass chicken was left over from a drive-up fried chicken concession that had been abandoned. It was 97 degrees, so we soaked our wet vests after lunch.
We had the dubious distinction of riding through Dallas without getting on a toll road. Ugh! The traffic was terrible – and this on a Saturday! I can’t imagine what it would be like on a weekday during rush hour. We agreed that we’d find another way around Dallas next time we pass this way. In hindsight, having fewer miles to travel was a good balance to the traffic hassle.
We got to our hotel about 3 p.m., showered, and took a dip in the pool. We walked to the nearby deli for dinner. Time to chill as tomorrow will be a hot – and more humid – travel day.
