This was a relaxed and awesome riding day. The sky was clear, the temperature warm, and the scenery extremely beautiful. I took my time this morning getting packed and  had breakfast at the host hotel. I headed south toward Albuquerque where I picked up US-550. This is a beautiful 4-lane road that heads to Farmington. It crosses “High Country,” at about 7000 ft. At Shiprock I turned north on US-431.

North of Cortez the scenery changes dramatically as the road drops from the High Country into a canyon. It’s called, “Calamity Rd.” but I hope not.

CO-145 and 141 wind through the canyon and follow the river. When I planned this route I could see there would be winding roads, but I was shocked when I saw the sheer beauty of the landscape.

There was an old-time Mobil gas station in a small town.

The road goes through public lands, so there were very few dwellings and little service. I saw very few cars. I had the road to myself for mile after mile. I did wonder how I’d get assistance if I broke down. Someone passing by would have helped, but I’m glad I have the satellite tracker that allows me to send text messages.

There were a few gravel stopping points with spectacular views.

I’m in a luxury tent site at a KOA. I have electric, water, and Wi-Fi.

I capped the day by having dinner with a long-time friend, Susan, whose husband, Peter, passed away in April. Peter was the Best Man at our wedding. Susan and I covered a whole range of topics. She has a gardening business and many friends and activities. It was reassuring to see she is doing well.

Beth left early with friends and headed east. Somewhere just past Amarillo she noticed her shifter was lying flat on the floorboard. The bolt came out of the lever attached to the shifter shaft. Roadside Assistance towed her to the Harley dealer in Amarillo, where they fixed the problem.
